What Is a Water Pump?

A water pump is part of a vehicle's cooling system. It circulates coolant through the engine block, hoses, and radiator to maintain an operating temperature and prevent overheating. Water pumps are typically driven by the engine's crankshaft via a belt, chain, or gear.

Signs of a Failing Water Pump

Coolant Leaks: A noticeable puddle of coolant under the vehicle or visible leaks around the pump indicate potential failure.

Overheating Engine: If the engine temperature gauge rises abnormally or the engine overheats, the water pump may not be circulating coolant effectively.

Whining Noise: A high-pitched noise coming from the front of the engine could be due to a failing water pump bearing.

Steam from the Radiator: Steam or excess heat emanating from the radiator suggests that the cooling system, potentially the water pump, is not functioning properly.

Water Pump Replacement and Maintenance

Most water pumps are designed to last between 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but their lifespan can vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions. Regular maintenance can extend the life of the water pump.
